News Well, all I can say is I am sorry for the down time. I could go through my list of excuses but.... Due to the old machine being switched off prematurely we have lost a few months of articles - these will be slowly added back in over the coming few weeks.

Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash - Review

Science Fiction Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash - Review Markus reviews Snow Crash, a Cyberpunk classic by Neil Stephenson, and quite likes "the Neuromancer for the 90s" as it was billed (curse the marketeers), despite the underlying plot being a bit 'far-fetched'.

Now now, since when did this stop a good SF story? Great book, compulsive reading, a classic indeed - if you can (still) abide yesteryear's 'latest thing', i.e. Cyberpunk.

BSFA Awards 2006 Press Release

Awards Alex McLintock writes:
The British Science Fiction Awards for 2006 were presented in a ceremony on the evening of Saturday the 7th of April at Contemplation, the 58th National British sciene fiction convention (Eastercon).

The award for Best Novel went to Jon Courtenay Grimwood, for End of the World Blues (Gollancz); the award was presented to Jon by Ian McDonald.

Fantasy Riverrun S P Somtow SucharitulMarkus reviews Riverrun, the initial instalment in the Trilogy of the same name by S. P. Somtow (aka Somtow Sucharitkul), and finds it a fascinating escapist Dark Fantasy, starring Vampires, Dragons, and the river that runs through the entire Universe, holding together all worlds – all wrapped up in a King Lear based background scenario.
A great book, aimed at the older Adolescent to Adult market.

At Play in the Killing Fields is a series of three very different science fiction stories that center around Joe Kaye (See also: The False Prophet of Fennimore Place). Although each story is significantly different they seem to carry similar themes about energy, education and the conservation of our planet's natural resources.

Science Fiction Ken MacLeod – Cosmonaut Keep - Review Markus writes on the topic of Cosmonaut Keep, the first book in Ken MacLeod’s "Engines of Light" series:
Given that I recently managed to buy not one, but two copies of this book I thought I'd better give one of them a spin... what I found was an excellent book, which was nominated for a Hugo Award for good reason (no, it couldn't win, not against 'American Gods'!). Recommended – and I'm now after the other two books in the Trilogy. One copy only, though, if I can help it.

Instead we have some excellently executed urban storytelling, playing in this world, in parallel realities, or in the near-future. A great book, well worth reading!

Eastercon, Kurt Vonnegut, & The Hub Magazine recommendation

Fannish Activity And we're back... we've been to Eastercon, which had a great programme, we've (nearly) recovered from the traditional lurgy now, we've learned that Kurt Vonnegut had died - So it Goes.

One thing I picked up at Eastercon, and which could interest you, is a publication called Hub Magazine, containing short stories, reviews, interviews (including Charlie Stross in the current edition), news etc. Looks great, the bits I read were informative and/or entertaining, definitely recommended. Check out their website for full contents, ordering etc.

"The title, pornographic as it sounds (or is that only me?), refers to the Hardware, Software, and Wetware (ie humans – what a limited definition) that today’s world of IT requires. Not sure she really 'got it', though."
